Shoppers spent Thanksgiving week stuffing their shopping bags with

Nintendo hardware, setting the stage for 2004 to be the year of the hand-held holidays.

Shoppers snapped up more than 500,000 Nintendo DS systems during Thanksgiving week,

representing more than 90 per cent of all units available in stores across the United

    States.

With Nintendo DS sales moving faster than anticipated, some locations have

reported sellouts, and Nintendo predicts the initial North American supply will be depleted

within days. As additional shipments are rushed to stores by this weekend to meet the

demand, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America alone by the

end of 2004 - a mark that took Apple's iPod 19 months to achieve.

    Nintendo's other

hand-held system, Game Boy Advance, also soared during the holiday weekend. Nintendo sold

more than 800,000 Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP units during the past week. The

combined 1.3 million Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance units sold last week set a new

one-week sales record for hand-held systems. And the Game Boy Advance line remains on track

to be the best-selling hardware line of the year.

    Nintendo GameCube also posted

impressive numbers. The special bundle of a Nintendo GameCube and a Mario Kart : Double

Dash!! game has sold more than 250,000 units since its introduction in

    mid-November.

Nintendo DS is changing video games by providing players completely new

ways to interact with their games. The sharp, angular, silver-and-black dual-screened system

comes with a stylus and features a touch screen, voice control and wireless communication.

Nintendo DS, available now at an MSRP of USD 149.99, represents a third, distinct product

line for Nintendo, along with Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo DS comes

packaged with both a free, embedded PictoChat communication program, and a playable demo of

Metroid Prime Hunters with both single-player and multiplayer

    modes.

    Results from Phoenix

Marketing International's Consumer Buying Intentions Survey conclude that Wal-Mart and Best

Buy are the preferred retailers when it comes to electronic gaming purchases this holiday

season. More than half of the respondents surveyed in the market research study indicate

that Wal-Mart is number one with Best Buy coming in second. More than a 15 percentage point

spread separates Best Buy from their nearest competitor.

    This research study

discovered that females are more likely than males to purchase games at mega stores such as

Wal-Mart and Target, while males prefer electronic stores and online shopping. Specialty

stores such as Electronics Boutique or GameStop are preferred by younger gamers stated David

Pluchino, Senior Research Manager at Phoenix Marketing International.

    Owners of the

more youth oriented Nintendo GameCube, prefer to buy games and accessories at toy stores

such as Toys R Us and KB Toys, while owners of the more advanced Microsoft Xbox are

significantly more likely to purchase their games at electronic stores such as Best Buy and

    Circuit City added Pluchino.

The Phoenix Marketing International Consumer Buying

Intentions Survey is based on a market research study of 30,169 completed interviews with

24,980 having an electronic gaming system in their household including more than half owning

a PlayStation 2, Xbox, or GameCube System.

    CD Projekt, producer of The

Witcher, a new exciting game based on a highly modified version of the Bioware Aurora

Engine, announced a collaboration with nVidia.

nVidia and CD Projekt are working

together to prepare the game to playing on nVidia graphics processing units (GPUs). The

Companies will also engage in strategic co-marketing activities as part of nVidia's The Way

It's Meant to Be Played program.

The Witcher, as the authors of the game assure us,

shows a completely new approach to the RPG genre, combining dynamic action with a deep and

immersing storyline. The Witcher is set in a rich, diverse fantasy world created by Andrzej

Sapkowski, a world, where you can't see a clear-cut difference between good and evil.

Geralt, the game's main hero, is The Witcher - master swordsman and a professional

monster-slayer. Yet, as we soon find out, altough these skills come in handy, not every

matter can be handled by the sword... As in real life, sometimes all you need to do to get

the information you want is to sit and talk with somebody over a glass of beer, or beat the

hell out of him in a bar fight to convince him to your arguments during the

    discussion.

Then there are the ladies... as is the case in every other place in the

universe, you can either win them by using your courtly speech and charm, or... sby parading

your heavily stuffed purse. You also have to adjust your actions to the day-and-night cycle,

according to which every character and monster in the game lives. Each quest in The Witcher

can be solved in a number of different ways, and every choice you make can determine which

of three endings of the game will be yours to see.

    Besides the diversified story, the

game will also include a lot of technical novelties, such as numerous modifications to the

Bioware Aurora Engine. They include: a rendering system based on the newest DirectX

libraries that provides full support for the newest technologies; real-time deflections and

    refractions; complex, visually-spectacular system of weather and night-and-day cycles;

full-screen effects system; and a dynamic, real-time fighting system. What's more, the

Witcher is going to be the first RPG game in history to employ a physics engine

(Criterion's Karma, used in the Unreal series) that is responsible for realistic behaviour

of both the items and characters of the game.

    Darryl Still, head of developer

relations EMEA at NVIDIA comments The Witcher is certainly an RPG with a difference! Through

using a very strong and reliable game engine, CD Projekt have been able to focus closely on

the immersive gameplay and compelling storyline. We were thrilled when they chose nVidia as

their development platform, and we think that the end result not only looks great, but is

sure to provide a thoroughly enjoyable and rock solid experience for the gamers.

    As

part of nVidia's The Way It's Meant to Be Played program, The Witcher will undergo

extensive compatibility testing to ensure a no hassles install-and-play experience for

gamers equipped with nVidia GPUs. CD Projekt has optimized the game for nVidia hardware and

is working with nVidia to ensure the game plays well across a broad lineup of GPUs, from the

brand new GeForce 6800 series to the GeForce

    3.

    IBM, Sony

Corporation and Toshiba Corporation unveiled for the first time some of the key concepts of

the highly-anticipated advanced microprocessor, code-named Cell, they are jointly developing

for next-generation computing applications, as well as digital consumer

    electronics.

The four companies also announced that they would reveal technical

details of Cell at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) to be held from

February 6th to 10th, 2005, in San Francisco.

    Specifically, the companies confirmed

that Cell is a multicore chip comprising a 64-bit Power processor core and multiple

synergistic processor cores capable of massive floating point processing. Cell is optimized

for compute-intensive workloads and broadband rich media applications, including computer

entertainment, movies and other forms of digital content.

    Other highlights of the

    Cell processor design include:

    -Multi-thread, multicore

    architecture.

-Supports multiple operating systems at the same

    time.

-Substantial bus bandwidth to/from main memory, as well as companion

    chips.

    -Flexible on-chip I/O (input/output) interface.

    -Real-time resource

    management system for real-time applications.

    -On-chip hardware in support of

security system for intellectual property protection.

    (nm) silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology.

    -Additionally, Cell uses custom circuit

design to increase overall performance, while supporting precise processor clock control to

    enable power savings.

IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba will disclose more details about

Cell in four technical papers scheduled for presentation at the International Solid State

    Circuits Conference.

Less than four years ago, we embarked on an ambitious

collaborative effort with Sony Group and Toshiba to create a highly-integrated

microprocessor designed to overcome imminent transistor scaling, power and performance

limitations in conventional technologies, said Dr. John E. Kelly III, senior vice president,

IBM. Today, we're revealing just a sampling of what we believe makes the innovative Cell

processor a premiere open platform for next-generation computing and entertainment

    products.

Massive and rich content, like multi-channel HD broadcasting programs as

well as mega-pixel digital still/movie images captured by high-resolution CCD/CMOS imagers,

require huge amount of media processing in real-time. In the future, all forms of digital

content will be converged and fused onto the broadband network, and will start to explode,

said Ken Kutaragi, executive deputy president and COO, Sony Corporation, and president and

Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. To access and/or browse sea of content freely in

real-time, more sophisticated GUI within the 3D world will become the 'key' in the future.

Current PC architecture is nearing its limits, in both processing power and bus bandwidth,

    for handling such rich applications.

The progressive breakdown of barriers between

personal computers and digital consumer electronics requires dramatic enhancements in the

capabilities and performance of consumer electronics. The Cell processor meets these

requirements with a multi-processor architecture/design and a structure able to support

high-level media processing. Development of this unsurpassed, high-performance processor is

well under way, carried forward by dedicated teamwork and state-of-the-art expertise from

Toshiba, Sony Group and IBM, said Mr. Masashi Muromachi, Corporate Vice President of Toshiba

Corporation and President & CEO of Toshiba's Semiconductor Company. Today's announcement

shows the substantial progress that has been made in this joint program. Cell will

substantially enhance the performance of broadband-empowered consumer applications, raise

the user-friendliness of services realized through these applications, and facilitate the

use of information-rich media and communications.

    Cell provides a breakthrough

solution by adopting flexible parallel and distributed computing architecture consisting of

independent, multi-core floating point processors for rich media processing. With the

capability to support multiple operating systems, Cell can perform both PC/WS operating

systems as well as real-time CE/Game operating systems at the same time. Scalability offered

by Cell can be utilized for broader applications, from small digital CE systems within the

home to other entertainment applications for rendering movies, and to the big science

    applications as supercomputers.

A team of engineers from IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba

are collaborating on the design and implementation of Cell which is expected to deliver vast

floating point capabilities, massive data bandwidth and scalable, supercomputer-like

performance. The design work is taking place at a joint development lab the three companies

established in Austin, Texas, after the project was announced in 2001.

    IBM plans to

begin pilot production of Cell microprocessors at its 300mm wafer fabrication facility in

East Fishkill, NY during the first half of 2005. The first computing application IBM plans

for Cell is the Cell processor-based workstation it is developing with SCEI.

    Sony

Corporation expects to launch home servers for broadband content as well as high-definition

television (HDTV) systems powered by Cell in 2006.

    Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

also expects to launch its next generation computer entertainment system powered by Cell to

revolutionize the experience of computer entertainment.

    Toshiba Corporation envisions

diverse applications for Cell and expects to launch its first Cell-based product, a

    high-definition television (HDTV), in 2006.

It seems that after a very long delay, ATI is now

beginning to reap the rewards of its very expensive deal with Valve. Statistics coming back

from Steam users, following the release of Half-Life 2, indicate some good news for the

    Canadian graphics giant.

For over a year now the company stood to one side as

Valve's troubles adversly effected the company's planning but ATI knew that if it remained

patient it would eventually benefit from its choice to partner with Valve.

    According

to figures released by Valve regarding the hardware profiles of Steam users, for the first

time in recorder history the mighty GeForce 4 MX has been toppled from the top. The new King

of Steam is ATIs 9800 series board which, surprisingly, even beats the 9600 series, a

    cheaper DirectX 9 card.

This change in leadership was observed immediately following

H-L 2s release in The U.S. and in the rest of the world. The leading quartet of boards is

made up of two card from each manufacturer as the GeForce4 MX is still hanging to 2nd place,

with the Radeon 9600 in 3rd and the GF 4 trailing in 4th place.

    The Steam figures are

a testament to the excessive pricing by both manufacturers in their war for the speed crown,

since their flagship boards, the 6800 Ultra and the XT800 XT PE both have a ludicrous 0.31

per cent share of Steam gamers. Other graphics setups worthy of a mention are Intel's 810

with 0.47 per cent and nVidia's TNT2 which still hangs on to a 1.38 per cent

    share.

So Steam is also useful for collecting user hardware information, we are

certain however that Valve asks for permission before collecting user

    information.

It may have taken a while but Valve has admited to the stutter bug as described by many

Half-Life 2 users. The company has already released a patch through Steam which addresses

    those issues.

The problem is described by Valve's Gary McTaggart as being

...actually three different bugs. Two of them are fixed and should (hopefully) be out

tomorrow. Still working on the third one which only happens on NVidia

    cards/drivers.

The patch on offer now, through Steam, fixes the two main problems but

not the nVidia issue. In order to receive the update, users have to quit and reload

    Steam.

It seems that game sales have really

kicked off across all gaming genres. The latest recipient of the public's love and money

    was World of Warcraft.

Launched Tuesday, November 23rd, the company's

subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) sold-through to

consumers an estimated 250,000 copies of the game. At retailers across the country, players

lined up for blocks at midnight to purchase the game, which sold out in many stores

nationwide after only one day on store shelves.

In just the first day alone, over

200,000 players created World of Warcraft accounts, and over 100,000 were already playing

the game concurrently as of 5:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday. The account-creation and

concurrent-user populations are both record numbers for a MMORPG on its first day of launch,

making World of Warcraft the fastest-growing online game in history. World of Warcraft is

expected to continue to shatter records and achieve a record-setting week-one population in

the days ahead. With dozens of World of Warcraft servers already filled to capacity,

Blizzard is deploying additional servers rapidly to match the growing player base.

    We

had a lot of confidence in World of Warcraft, but the success on day one far exceeded our

expectations, said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. We are extremely

happy that players are enjoying our game, and we are doing everything we can to meet the

demand and maintain a fun and smooth game experience for everyone playing.

    Retailers

across North America, including Wal-Mart, EB, GameStop, and others are reporting that

hundreds of their stores have sold out of World of Warcraft due to the demand. If consumers

have not yet purchased their copy of World of Warcraft, they are advised to call ahead to

make sure their store has copies still in stock.

    Blizzard Entertainment and its

retail partners are expecting all remaining supplies of World of Warcraft to sell out soon.

Meanwhile, the company is working diligently to increase server capacity to accommodate the

growing number of players connecting to the game. As the additional servers are brought

online and proven stable, additional copies of World of Warcraft will be made available at

retail. Blizzard will announce the availability of those additional games as soon as they

    are on retail shelves.

Warcraft will be available at retail on November 26, 2004.

    Leading up to the release,

the current closed beta will be followed by a final beta test when thousands of additional

players, including those who have pre-ordered the game, will be able to adventure in

Blizzard's epic world. Further details regarding the Final Beta Test, currently scheduled

for December 2004, will be announced in the weeks ahead.

    European Product Packaging

    and Pricing

World of Warcraft will be available in Europe for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP

and Macintosh at a suggested retail price of GBP 29.99, and will include a free one-month

subscription to the game. The game and packaging will be fully localised in English, French

and German; a localised box and manual will be available for Spanish and Italian players.

For the initial shipment, the standard edition of World of Warcraft will be available in all

of the aforementioned languages in two unique box covers representing the major factions of

the world Alliance and Horde. Both boxes include the full version of the game on four

    CD-ROM disks.

The special collector's edition of World of Warcraft will also be

available at launch, in limited quantities, for a suggested retail price of GBP 44.99. The

game, box and manual will be available in English, French and German; the box and manual

will also be localised into Spanish and Italian. The special collector's edition will

include the World of Warcraft game on both CD-ROM and DVD, a free one-month subscription, a

World of Warcraft behind-the-scenes DVD in English, an exclusive in-game pet, a cloth map of

the game world, a soundtrack CD, an Art of the World of Warcraft coffee table book, and a

commemorative game manual signed by the development team.

    After the initial free

one-month subscription ends, players of World of Warcraft will be able to continue playing

under one of three different subscription plans. The month-to-month subscription plan will

cost GBP 8.99 per month, the three-month plan will cost GBP 8.39 per month, and the

six-month plan will cost GBP 7.69 per month.

    Local Support in Europe

    World of

Warcraft is supported in Europe by the local Blizzard team. The European Blizzard

Entertainment team, made up of more than 10 nationalities, is responsible for all aspects of

game and platform operation, including localised offline customer support, community

management, and in-game support through French, German and English speaking game masters. In

addition, the local web, marketing and communications teams provide support and tools for

the community, trade and press. World of Warcraft is the first non-licensed MMORPG in Europe

to have the support of a dedicated local team.

    Following the huge worldwide demand

for World of Warcraft evidenced in recent Beta Tests, Blizzard will establish regional

servers specific to each geographical location to increase performance and support for World

of Warcraft worldwide. European players will therefore initially play on any of the European

servers in English, French or German. Retaining players on their own geographical servers at

release will ensure the stability of the technical infrastructure installed in each

territory, and will allow for the best possible customer support for players in their local

    language at the local time.

The regionally specific servers will start with the North

American launch. Blizzard is therefore strongly advising European players not to buy the

North American version of the game, as access to North American servers will be limited to

residents of North America, Australia and New Zealand. Alternatively, players are

recommended to pre-order the European version of the game to guarantee a box copy on the day

of launchas well as guaranteed access to the European Final Beta Test.

    For those

European gamers still wishing to play with their American friends on the North American

servers, and vice versa, Blizzard will provide a means to make this possible after the

    European launch.

showcases the use of most weapons including rocket launchers sniper rifles and explosives.

The movie highlights the purchase mode which you use to outfit your character and may well

be a hint to an RPG element of the game. The video also includes impressive footage of the

player taking out an enemy helicopter while the necessary battles with loud and foul-mouthed

enemies is also present. The movie also showcases some of the stealth-play elements with

attacks on enemies from behind as well as gadgets such as a Directional microphone.

The game features a colourful, and frequently deadly, variety of 22 weapons and

handheld devices, which all need to be employed in different ways in the game depending on

their individual strengths and weaknesses and the situation at hand. Its possible to carry

as many weapons as the physical strength of your character will allow, and other weapons can

weapon type, they will find that their accuracy and the overall effectiveness of the weapon

in combat will improve dramatically. In addition they will be able to upgrade weapons for

example magazine size, range, recharge time, etc and use different types of ammunition

International's recently released market research study entitled Consumer Buying

Intentions, four out five households play video games. Although the majority are playing via

a home PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox or Game Boy, the original PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Super

Nintendo are cited as the systems played most often by one-third of gamers. In addition,

seventeen per cent of survey participants planning to purchase an electronic gaming system

this holiday season will be buying older systems.

    Whether playing on a computer,

console (e.g., PlayStation 2, Xbox, or GameCube), or handheld system (e.g., Game Boy, Nokia

N-Gage, Tapwave Zodiac), the majority of US households are gaming according to David

Pluchino, Senior Research Manager at PMI. Interestingly, more than a third of gamers are

holding onto older systems and actively using them, added Pluchino.

    A large

proportion of gamers are also playing video games via a handheld device, specifically,

variations of Nintendo's Game Boy system. When asked about future purchases, one out of ten

households indicated they would be picking up a new handheld system this holiday season.

This is not surprising stated Pluchino, with the increase in leisure travel, parents are

looking for ways to entertain their kids during long drives or airplane trips.

    The

Phoenix Marketing International Consumer Buying Intentions Survey was fielded during the

month of October 2004. The findings from this market research study are based on information

from 30,169 completed interviews with 24,980 having an electronic gaming system in their

household including more than half owning a PlayStation 2, Xbox, or GameCube

    System.

On the eve of the 41st anniversary of John F Kennedy's murder, a dramatic new

'docu-game' is set to bring his tragic assassination by Lee Harvey Oswald to life for a

whole new generation. The game, produced by Scotland's Traffic Games, has been criticized

by the family of former US president John F Kennedy, for being insensitive. The game asks

you to take Lee Harvey Oswald's place at the book depository and rewards players for

getting their shots as close as possible to those fired by the assassin.

    JFK Reloaded

recreates the last few moments of the President's life and challenges participants to help

disprove any conspiracy theory by recreating the three shots that Lee Harvey Oswald made

from the infamous sixth floor of the Dallas book depository.

    The 'docu-game'

accurately recreates the surroundings and events of 22nd November 1963 in downtown Dallas,

using information from the Warren Commission report, and has taken a ten-man team seven

months to research and six months to program. Painstakingly detailed, the reconstruction

enables players to examine the challenges that faced Oswald.

    Crucially, it shows how

so many conspiracy theories have emerged surrounding the incident, given the difficulty of

    the task.

This new form of interactive entertainment brings history to life and will

stimulate a younger generation of players to take an interest in this fascinating episode of

American history, commented Kirk Ewing, managing director of Traffic and the creator of

JFKReloaded.com. We've created the game in the belief that Oswald was the only person that

fired the shots on that day, although this recreation proves how immensely difficult his

    task was.

Although they are based in Glasgow, Scotland, Traffic is aware of the

passion in the US surrounding the death of one of America's greatest heroes and is

determined to promote the title respectfully whilst encouraging as many people to play the

    game as possible.

Downloaded from the the game website, link available by following

the download tab above, for USD 9.99 (approx GBP 6), players are invited to participate in a

global recreation of the assassination in order to disprove the conspiracy theorists once

and for all. Traffic has offered an incentive of up to USD 100,000 for the first person to

most accurately recreate the three shots made by Lee Harvey Oswald.

    We genuinely

believe that if we get enough people playing the game we'll be able to disprove once and

for all any notion that someone else was involved in the assassination. The computer

ballistics model says it's possible, but players will discover just how hard it is to place

those three bullets in exactly the same way that Oswald did.

    Editors note:

JFKReloaded is a downloadable game only available from the website from midnight on the 22nd

November 2004 and will for 3 months

    thereafter.
