Putting aside that the launcher would download and overwrite changes of ALL the equipment files if you do not abort the updates there is no difference in how these files are protected.That just that one file is overwritten appears strange.

now that you say it... the files are being copied depending on which button you press on the launcherI did not think about this minor detail and could not check it since I am on a different dev build atm.

No, they are not just for economy updates.There are other parts of the mod which needs frequent updates.
