in case of the older AMD CPUs the the bottleneck were the cores.their architecture prevented effective use of resources (cache) and transportation of datain the end the high amount of cores had to wait for the required data. Intel had a better way to get that done

For most games a good graphic card is essential.There are exceptions to that.Especially simulations which have to do many calculations that are not graphic related require a fast CPU.Also games like Star Wars The Old Republic seems to require a good CPU to handle instances with many players.
