sp2 or 3 doesn't affect gameplay much, it makes XP work with more stuff. But indeed XP is the top efficient windows, uses very little, keeping it clean you can make it use only 70-80 Mb of your RAM in total, where if you get Vista to use less than 800 you are a lucky (I did, but it was a bit ugly xD).
