The boxes give you clues to where you need to go next. By the sounds of it, you might have missed the one that gives you the next 'chapter' of quests.
Hint: It's a long way from the coalition side of Altair. When you're done with the blackboxes, any station will buy them (the ones from DK space) for $9mil cr.
If it helps, I also found what your doing at the moment is (IMHO) very, very difficult.
If youre honestly feeling like you're going to give up, send me a PM and I'll give you a hint.

Is it possible that youre loading an autosave?
Enemy numbers seem to be insane if you load an autosave when you're jumping into a hostile environment. My trick has been to instantly turn around and jump back through the gate, repeat to get back to where you were initially, and abracadabra! all the hostiles are gone for 20 seconds or more so you have time to get those cruise engines going.
As for the Bullpup Mk III (as recommended by BullWinkle - thanks again) I've found that to be one of the best ships for exploring.
stabbling twin (advanced) thrusters combined with engine kill can keep you travelling at 300+. If you find better ones you go faster, but I found that the advanced thrusters and a simple lv7 shield were enough to get my way out of trouble. If you want to actually take the bad guys on then lv10 armour, shield gen and lv5 power is highly recommended. Also, if you think youre going to get CD'd while cruising you have 2 options :
1. The obvious 'spam CM's'. 2-3 countermeasures seem to do the trick.
2. Hit engine kill and drift away at cruise speeds. (Occasionally, a CM / missile seems to hit and engages your engine thus killing your speed. Not sure about how / why this occurs, perhaps someone experienced could give a better idea)Happy exploring

Hi Martind,
I had a similar experience getting to Coalition space in the first place! The info given on the following thread helped me make my way through a good few DK systems, take a look if you havnt already :
http://www.swat-portal.com/php…0c59db2d9275e03a2547e2905 -
Fixed by fresh reinstall, things are making so much more sense now the news is available.[203]
Should have tried before, but I only clean installed 10 days ago.
Maybe Avast AV disagreed with something and ate it? [77]

Thanks for clearing that up OP,
I'm pretty sure I've encountered some sort of bug or corruption, as no dock anywhere in the game now has the 'server news' option in the bar.
Additionally, none of the people in the bars in sovetskaya want to speak to me apart from the occasional job offer, and I havnt received the story info that I'm told I should have.
The following are things that might have caused it IMHO :
I have sold all datadisks, and retained 2 black boxes. Could this have affected the behaviour of bar rumours?
I ran through Sovetskaya pretty quick the first time, it could be that I missed the guy in the bar and undocked without speaking to him/her. Would they remain there until I spoke to them or does a player only get one chance to talk to the rumour giver?
I migrated from 1.8 to 1.81 without clearing out all savegames. (although I did uninstall mod, uninstall FL, reboot, reinstall FL, reactivate mod)
Just a thought, but is it possible that the rumour giver doesnt appear all the time - Like some of the bribe givers dont appear until you revisit a bar a few times..?

Bullwinkle - I stumbled across a jumpgate to
, which I assume is DK space since I couldnt see any dark ion cannons or friends around, and there's a hint of danger in the music that plays when you get there
Can I just continue on without
decrypting the BB coordinates
?
Bond - Tried and tried again, sadly no dice
For information the 'bug' started very shortly after the end of the standard freelancer SP story conclusion. I've reloaded all saves around that time, and all of a sudden, just after
bribing rep with corsairs after the DV data disk is found to get access to their bases
(not sure if its just coincidence) all server news just disappears.
I'll try a reinstall soon, but I fear all my savegames are gubbed.
Edit : not that it's a worry, I plan to come to MP just as soon as Ive found inner core on SP so a knackered savegame just missing a bit of story this time around

Thanks for the replies chaps.
Can I just double check something - by saying that there is no news in bars any more, I mean that the news icon doesnt come up at bars. I usually see a suitcase for the missions, but no 'piece of paper' icon for the server news.
Is this correct for the coalistion planets and bases? or is there supposed to be a server news available at almost every dock?
Thanks again.

It is hard to know exactly where you are in the game without discussing which black boxes you have found. If you ask your question in the Freelancer Spoiler Forum then I will help you.
BTW, I hope that you meant the "1.8 storyline". CF 1.8 has fewer bugs than recent versions of 1.7, so there is no good reason (that I can think of) not to use 1.8... unless *I* have missed something (which is also possible!).
Tip: You can hide possible spoiler information by using the "Spoiler" button above the text box for the message that you write. The rollover text for the button should say that, but it does not.
Thanks Bullwinkle, I guess I posted in this thread thinking that the 'disappearing bar news' might be a bug, but then digressed into something totally different. New thread started in the spoiler section.
(Oh, and I by 1.7 part of the story, I meant everything that existed pre-1.8. I am, of course, running the latest 1.8.1
)

Hi All,
I'm a bit lost trying to follow the storyline in SP. I collected my last blackbox from
and it finishes by saying
I should go to the nearest coalition station and start looking for rumours.
In the course of doing that I've found many new 1.8 systems (very cool), and many new ships (also very cool, but cant decide which I like the most!) but no further story.
In my desperation, I've made about 120m cr and gone to buy the osiris bs with a mind to go and explore the DK systems.
All rumours seem to have disappeared from bars in the coalition stations, and apart from finding the fairly obvious but seemingly inert sleeperships in
sovetskya
I'm at a bit of a loss.
I guess Ive got a couple of questions here :
1. Is it right that there doesnt seem to be any bar 'news' any more on coalition bases/planets, or is my install corrupt?
2. Should I go to DK space on a hunt for clues, or am I missing something in coalition space?
Thanks for any help

Hi Guys,
I can't see any Bar based rumours in Coalition any more, and consequently can't seem to continue the story. (unless Im missing something obvious - very possible) I've got the first couple of BB's and dont know what to do next.
Have I messed something up?
e.g by selling datadisks/ blackboxes, possibly accidently destroying the contents of a wreck?..or is it a bug/ temporary omission?
Many Thanks.
PS Am planning to join the MP server very soon, once Ive at least completed the 1.7 storyline. I'd imagine there's many others in the same boat, so hopefully we'll be struggling with server capacity due to 100's if not 100's of players wanting to join the fun

Hi OP,
A Bullpup MkIII.
This was on SP, after loading an autosave. All previous saves seem to be fine.
I don't seem to experience any other problems apart from occasional CTD when docking tradelanes in Sol or coalition space.
Here's my system spec just in case it's useful:
Intel E6850 Core duo @3Ghz
XFX 260 GTX Black edition (patched to latest nvidia drivers - 6.14.11.9562)
4Gb Corsair RAM
Win XP Pro 32bit (Patched to latest) -
Seems to be working after a reboot and going back to a previous save game, not sure what caused it.
-
Hi,
Quite possible I'm missing something, but the tradelane from New Hong Kong jg to Planet Balboa seems to be undockable.
After pressing F3, it lines you up to the gate then doesn't do anything.
Have tried flying to next TL in line, but same seems to happen.
Any ideas or have I stumbled across a bug?
-
Thanks fellas.
Since a certain box mentioned it, I thought I may have to collect a certain 2 things, return to sol, bribe then go all the way back again. Phew!
-
Could anyone tell me whether bribing coalition reputation works before you've actually met them?
e.g. they dont yet appear on the reputation list -
Fair point, but Freelancer has a kind of 2d concept to it where (usually) all the planets are on the same horizontal plain.
For example :
- You could tell someone to go north from their current position (which would make no sense in space, but does in freelancer - head up on the navmap)
- When you press 'space bar' you are automatically orientated to a level flying position, this is always the same orientation, and to me (being a lowly planet dweller and not used to such concepts) this is 'the right way up'. Without it, I'd probably lose my sense of direction a lot more.
I think that's what Bullwinkle was getting at?
-
Bullwinkle - Thanks, that's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. I thought that the agility of a fighter (and a maneuverable VHF at that) would be essential. Also the sliding backwards technique is one I had forgotten (learned initially from many months of TNG). I seem to get too easily flustered in combat these days, and end up boosting back through a pack of enemies.. *Reaches for Kool Aid*
Micheal - Cheers. I looked for the PPC on earth (remembering them from 1.4 days perhaps?) but must have scrolled past them in my excitiment. That'll help
*runs off to make some more credits*

Hi All,
First of all, great job OP! Quite unbelievable that this is still based on the original Freelancer code base. The focus and determination needed to do this must have been incredible.
If I'd known what you were up to I would have sent cookies and pizza to helpSecondly, I'm a nab
Sad but true. I'm struggling to get to Coalition space without getting lynched somewhere in Mandar. Every time I get close to the Gurm or Gladius jumpgates, a couple of squadrons of nomads CD me (seemingly immune to CM's) and proceed to kick the snot out of me. I'm sliding and boosting like a nutter, but them 'mad's (and the DK gunboats) hit hard. Can take 4-5 of them down before running totally out of NB/SB and being unwillingly humped to death.
My question is :
What kind of ship / shields / guns etc is required to make that trip? Im flying an 'Abraxis' with lv10 shield, 2xDIAMONDBACKS, 2xBLUE BLAZE(? I think - wreck guns from X) and some fairly naff lv8 outcast guns to fill the lv9 mounts. Is this enough? or should I scout around and trade a bit more before trying to get there?
Thanks for any help.
Caliban - hiding in SP at this time to avoid wtfpwnage.
