the "Profile" button at the top...

    then "Edit Options"

and "Select Style" is almost at the very bottom of the list of options. 2nd or 3rd one up.

i just went with the default this time...i think i had atlantis something or other before...

are you running a lot of processes in the background?
open up task manager and see what your cpu performance is at...if it stays maxed out, you'll get a lot of temporary freezes.

used to happen to me on my laptop...but since i was in SP, i didn't worry too much about it...besides...it was like i could freeze time for a half a second and readjust my aim...hehe

    "it's not a bug, it's a feature!"
    lol

editing the perfOptions.ini file to change the difficulty to 0 makes you invincible in single player...but it gets you kicked in multiplayer.

i admit, i used it a lot in SP to explore...but now i find that i have to work twice as hard to build up my skills because i got too lazy when i was invincible.

having a completely explored universe in SP makes finding stuff in MP a lot easier, but i still have to take the time to map my MP self.

you're better off finishing the sp storyline, then come straight to MP.

    i wish i had...

    yep.

changed forums styles and everything works perfectly.

to be honest...i never really checked out the different styles.

    thanks for the tip, op.

the code of conduct link is linking me to a german code of conduct...not sure if i can revise it into english but i'll give it a shot.

the other two links also gave me errors.

Finally started playing MP after many years of thoroughly enjoying Freelancer SP in all of its glory and many different mods.

Crossfire has always been my favorite mod to play in SP simply due to the sheer vastness of the Crossfire Universe.

Look forward to seeing you all in space...

I'll be flying my trusty Rhino through Liberty until i have the time to earn the creds for exploring.

well...the correct answer is actually yes...but it's tricky to get it just right.

you'll need a joystick that gives you the ability to customize EVERY key you use including whatever you use for thrust/directionals/strafing...

even with the keys mapped...it's hard to get the fluidity of the mouse for movement...which makes dogfighting and navigating in general a bit tiresome.

there ARE some joystick customization programs that will allow you to set up a certain number of keystrokes within a specified timeframe....which i think you could use with the "turn left/right" and "pitch up/down" hotkeys in game to get a smoother mouse replacement...but i haven't really looked into it.

i ended up going back to mouse and keyboard, and couldn't be happier.

look into getting a mouse with more programmable buttons...it might make the setup more joystick-like without taking the time to fine tune the custom keystroke configs. :)

30 years old here. it's nice to see such a range of ages finding enjoyment and companionship in the vast emptiness of the universe.

kind of makes infinity easier to grasp.

    be well.

    i appreciate the advice/warning...
being a complete MP noob, i've heard all of the stories about the differences between SP and MP pvp battles...and frankly...i look forward to sharpening my skills...i'm pretty good versus npcs, but i gladly welcome any and all pvp combat tips...
i've read up on several techniques and descriptions of battles...not sure how much of it was factual...i've been engine-kill/thrust fighting practically since day one...and i've gotta say that the 340 speed of the bullpup mk3 with dual advanced hydroxen thrusters is a great way to gain the upperhand in the battles with npcs...hit hard, then zoom out of their range only to zoom back for another hail of hellfire. :)

    bah. i've started rambling again.

i guess you folks will have to get used to that...
or just take it out on me in a dual-purpose dogfighting lesson when you see me in space...
    :D

i know that i haven't popped my MP cherry yet...but i've been playing FL for about two years now...

a friend of mine from another game mentioned that i might like some game called: "Freelancer"...so i googled it, and downloaded the "new york only" demo...

within 10 minutes of playing i was looking up the game on amazon and ordering it for the low low price of $15 US. (yeah...i know...the game was ancient even then)...

i continued playing the demo non-stop until the full version came, and i used that waiting time to try every available ship (not many in vanilla new york, but i HAD to try all of the ships...)

i also checked out the mod scene to see what, if anything, was available for this instantly addictive and intuitive game...

sure enough...i found plenty of mods...after checking a few readme files and downloading FLMM, i was trying out mods left and right...

of the "major conversion" mods i've played (Discovery and Crossfire 1.7)...Crossfire stands out...

sure...Discovery is great...but something just seemed to be lacking...CF added something i've wanted to see for some time...Earth. (i know that due to the storyline of the game, Earth was a stretch...but...the way that it was incorporated was perfect...)

i'm still having a blast suffering through SP, looting all the old vanilla wrecks that i've come to know and love, and exploring all of the new systems i come across...

the community here is (well...the vast majority...but every online game has a few bad apples) absurdly helpful and friendly...

i regularly check out the forum to find hints and advice whenever i'm stuck, or just looking for a new adventure...and i have to say that i respect and admire the viewpoint of: "i won't tell you specifically WHERE something is...but i'll give you a push in the right direction..."
that much is refreshing...far too often a forum is littered with so many spoilers and walkthroughs that it takes away from the exploration aspect of the game...which brings it all back to the topic at hand...

    ...what keeps me playing....

the list is longer than the hike from the center of Hiruga to the Motherships in Hyperspace...and back...

i look forward to joining the MP community as soon as i get a reliable connection...until then...i'll keep exploring in my Bullpup MKIII, or swap back to the Osiris as needed....

ps: at first i hated the dynamic economy throwing monkey wrenches in all of my trade routes...but now i look forward to the updates...gives the game that extra dimension of reality...

at any rate...i'm rambling...i hope that doesn't mark me kos the second i'm able to log in... :P

    see you all in space.
    happy freelancing.

I've been playing Crossfire SP for about two months now...

these forums have been very helpful in figuring out that which i was too impatient to find on my own...

i agree with the general consensus that the major draw of the game is the feeling of accomplishment that only genuinely comes from figuring it out on your own...yet sometimes a quick search of the forums prevents one from banging their head needlessly against the wall, or throwing the comp out the window in frustration.

    OP...thanks for a great mod.

CF community...thank you for unwittingly helping a "noob" earn his stripes in single player...

to be honest...i've been leeching wifi from my neighbors for the last few years, and i've finally had enough of the uncontrolled aspects of their router..."just reboot the dang thing already!"...at any rate...i'll be getting my own connection soon, and i'll probably be joining the ranks online asap.

as it is...i spend about 2-3 hours a day playing, with occasional sessions lasting 12 hours at a stretch...(yes...i have a very addictive personality)

looking forward to meeting all of the folks that didn't know they were giving me advice...
