    175 the best of them:
148 has the same speed but only one core so 175 is better than 148
165 has two cores but is slower than both 148 and 175. it makes it worse than 175...
depending on the use it would be better 148 or 165. for long and single heavy processes that requires heavy calculations (heavy excel calculations, scientific computing) 148 is maybe advisable, but for a more regular use the second core is a great advantage, so for FL id get 165

to choose 165 or 175 depends on the costs... 175 is somewhat better, but not much: about 5-10% better overall performance in my experience (well, in fact my experience is with 265, 270, and 275 cpus, that are the equivalent to 165, 170, and 175 for dual cpu systems, but no significative difference is expected)

on a sidenote, all those opterons are now outdated, as they employ the 'old' and -nowadays- expensive DDR memory. dunno if its possible, but id try to get a xeon (5100 or 5300 series) or a opteron series 1000, that shouldnt be much more expensive (the cpu is maybe a bit more expensive but the RAM is way cheaper) but the performance is significantly better

not sure about those readings of the data... at the top of the gender graph it sais 100 is the internet average, but not neccesarily the internet average in male and female population is the same

i mean, we can see the site has a 50% male attendance above the internet average, and a 50% female attendace below internet average. now think in whats internet average: 50/50?, 60/40?, 75/25?... those percents should be modified to take that into account...

even in the case its 50/50, female gets only 50 from a total of 200 and thas a 25%, not a third ^^

the same applies to age graph...

i wonder also how they can state the household income of someone just studying the number of monthly visits :/

on the other hand, that study includes only U.S. visitors... considering swat-portal is an european site with many visitors from europe and some from australia and south-america which arent take into account, i must cast doubt about the accuracy and reliability of the results shown in those graphs

if it does then press F8 before windows loads and select "Last Known Good Configuration" in the screen that should appear. that way the changes in windows should we reverted

if, as it seems, the screen doesnt works, then you have serious trouble, as it seems the bios update hasnt worked well...
in that case you should search your manual or ask tech support for restoring BIOS and pray for a dual bios in your motherboard

my advice is not to update the computer BIOS if the current version is working fine, as any failure in the update proccess can lead to almost irreversible damage

if the bios damage is confirmed and toshiba tech support doesnt solve your problem, get some bucks, find someone with some technical skill, and tell him to take a look at this site: http://www.arlabs.com/bioskit.htm

    good luck...

    just joking ;)

abandonware is software quite old whose legal owners, that cannot find a way of getting more money selling it, release for free

the site privvy pointed shows the next legal note:
"As far as we know, all software available for download on this site had been discontinued by their authors and is now available for free, or was published as free since release. We appreciate comments to remove any software that is not of free usage and has accidentaly appeared on this site."

so download the game and dont worry about legal issues for now ;)

another cool site for abandonware is www.abandonia.com

not quite surprising for a server that was formerly know as 24/7 Bloodguard Server :]

yep, some never leave, but most do...

my case is even worst: op is the only one remaining from the days when i joined server in late 2003 (ok, ok, also xl is here ^^). trowa and marc joined soon after me, but they are not easy to see online lately and no one else from those days plays here now

however, you can always look for the bright side: this gives you the chance to meet new ppl and do new friends... and you can always contact the old m8s using icq or messenger ;)

dunno where did you get that information, but im not agree with that virtual ram config:

virtual memory is much slower than physical memory. if virtual memory is much bigger than physical memory the system will eventually end using much more often virtual memory than strictly needed, and the overall performance will decrease

so, if you set a value too small for your virtual memory your system can tell you it has not enough memory to work but if you set a value too big you can experience your performance decreased

the optimum virtual memory size is dependant on the physical memory installed. for systems with 512MB or less it should be from 1.5 to 2 times the installed ram.
if your system has more than 1GB, it should be from 1 to 1.5 times the physical ram.
with higher ram setups (i see there is somebody out there with 4GB) to disable virtual memory is an option worth to study (at least in windows XP)

i really cannot see any environment in which its better to use a virtual memory 3 times the size of the physical ram (maybe with 128 or 256MB configs...). in fact, microsoft support team warns about the possibility of getting system crashes (BSOD) if a virtual memory of more than 4GB is used (especifically if you are using a fat32 volume... -more common than you can think-)

you know that your virtual ram is too high when you can hear your hard disk working hard but you didnt star a heavy I/O procces (providing you have not one of these ultra-silent HD ^^)

anyways i agree its better to set it as a fixed value

yep, lag is gone at last, great job m8s :D

however, i bring you 2 new bugs for your consideration...

look at the last line of the console welcome message in this pic:

and the whole console message in this one:

i guess none of these lines should be visible...

i know, nobody reads console messages so these arent importat bugs, but we want the first bugfree mod out there, isnt it ;)

btw, those lines werent displayed before the latest changes in flhook... seems related to a wrong array size or index... hopefully it seems no out_of_range_exception is thrown, so its not too serious (i guess there is a 10 where it should be a 9 and a 20 where it should be a 19...)

    duke nukem forever? ^^

you dropped a word in the name, the actual name is "duke nukem, developing forever" ^^

kaspersky is not light, but is not as heavy as norton or panda, so it can be used even by ppl with computers with some years old
mcaffe works in the same way, not too heavy unless you purchase all and every modules and let it autoconfigure ^^
i like avast too but it uses an interface somewhat different to all other antivirus and it takes some time to get used to it

    @scout: np m8 :) ... ill take a look on that peerguardian...;)

as an authorized voice (well, i regent a computers shop and kill more virus daily than most ^^) i can say that norton is currently a very bad antivirus... weighty, slow (in every sense, it makes your comp run slower, it is slow protecting against new viruses...) and stupidy annoying.
its very difficult to uninstall (it always left something behind) and it gets corrupted or starts giving weird error windows really easily...
i can say i repair more issues related with malfunctions of this antivirus than issues related with any virus
so i would recommend you to remove it (there is a removal tool available in symantec website in case you have trouble uninstalling), pack the cd in a box with some stones, label the box as "W32.Norton, highly dangerous", and trow it to the ocean close to an oceanic trech ;)

once said that lets answer the question:

i use a light antivirus, something with no useless colorful windows. currently i use avira antivir. its cheap (even free if you use the fully functional trial version and can live with the ads it display at every update), very light (it wont slow down your computer) and updates frequently.
it has had some issues related with the heuristic seach but, well, i disable that -mostly useless- stuff in every antivirus i install to avoid annoying false detections

for firewall i use no more than windows firewall:
a firewall must be able to close every port in your computer and open only those you select to those ip ranges you select. windows firewall is able to do that quite well. nothing more is needed for a firewall, so i dont see the point in installing another one
(well, unless 1) you need parental control, 2) your computer have several users with different firewall needs, 3) you need a really fine tune up, 4) you love colorful configure windows with silly wizards, or 5) you think your computer is running too fast and want to slow it down a bit)

as you see im a heavy supporter of light antivirus: if your security system takes more resources and creates more trouble than the threat it must fight, then something is not working fine... ;)

    just my thought :D

The older I get, the more attractive this looks... As for actually having a continuous connection to the internet, I doubt that the human psyche can handle that much information without complete dissociation of personality, and would likely lapse into permanent and irreversible psychosis (ala "Lawnmower Man")... :(

another interesting point of view about this matter is given by Robert J. Sawyer in "The terminal experiment". he places the idea of eternal virtual life, with instant access to all the knowledge of the human race without the limitations of the human body, against the inmortality of the physical human body that can be reached using the most advanced nanotechnology
the end of the book is a bit disturbing ^^
