Crossfire is a modification to the Freelancer file set. It does not
replace the main program for the game, nor does it add any new ones.
Crossfire does
not communicate to the outside world, and therefore does not need to pass through the
firewall. This is all handled for it by freelancer.exe.
Freelancer uses the
Directplay8 set of protocols to communicate first with the Global Catalogue server to obtain
a list of servers hosting multiplayer games. It uses UDP on port 2300 to do this.
Once you have selected the Multiplayer server you wish to connect to, another UDP
connection is established with that server in the range 2300-2400 (but usually starting from
2302). You need these ports, to allow each user to attach to the server and play (each
player needs there own port).
It therefore follows that your firewall must allow UDP
traffic through ports 2300-2400, or you will not be able to communicate with the Global
server, or connect to a hosting server.
