NPC Wingmen

  • From times to times, the FL community sees an big breakout inovative mod, such as the dinamic universe, and much of CF's own material and features.

There is another new one, the WIP (i think so) of the Advanced NPC Wingmen mod. It's server only, so not avaible for use outside their server. But who knows they can be friendly enought to allow it's usage in 1.7..

  • wow this sounds like a very intersting and useful mod :)) but the bad part is if that there is lots of Lag, u wont get a wing of npcs to help u. OP would it be possible to integrate this into 1.7? 8)

  • NPC wingman? I thought I suggested this once back when I was a noob and got scoffed at :D. Maybe not...hmm, anyway that's irrelevent. I think it's a fabulous idea. Is it really possible? It almsot sounds hard to beleive... I look forward to seeing such a grand feature in a future version of the mod. Cheers Ruivo for shedding some light on it 8).

  • well, right now the only way this would be possible is if Op manages to write this himself, independent from this mod i mentioned.

Unless that in the future the mod developers allow us to use that!! Wouldn't it be in a good size?

  • Privateer 2 had this feature. When you accepted a mission, you could also hire a wingman. The better his or her skills and courage, the higher the price. Some were worthless, some were an asset, and some were just entertainment. But of course Privateer 2 had no multiplayer element, so it's an apples to oranges comparison.

Since there's no similar feature in FL, I imagine it would be an enormously difficult thing to program.

But more importantly, it would decrease the need for roleplay, mulitplayer interaction, which is the raison d'etre of multiplayer.
In other words, if you can hire an NPC wingman for your cargo run, why bother finding a player in a fighter to escort you? Why bother joining a clan? Why bother building relationships with Crossfire fans in other countries?
The more you can accomplish without involving other players, the less dynamic and engaging the Crossfire community becomes. So it might be possible from a programming standpoint, but in the interest of maintaining a multiplayer and roleplaying community, it's a bad idea.

  • Hmmm. NPC wingmen... Could be useful as a life shield ^^

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

Being a Cynic isn't that bad. Either I'm right or I am pleasantly surprised.

  • In retropect, there are two things about NPC wingman that would make the mod fabulous on a whole new level. The first would be that singleplayer battles could become magnificant in scale (if the missions were made harder that is). One could have clashing wings of fighters with you stuck in the middle doing most of the damage :D. While playing MP though, the same could be true. If a clan descides to run a convoy somewhere it becomes a couple of trains, a VHF, and about 15 NPC VHFs :]. How about that for gameplay? Lol, this would be a logical and reasonable next step for the mod, and if the resulting lag could be managed effectively and it could all be pulled off, OP's modding repute could scale to all new heights 8).

  • titan: Two things you forgot, the NPC wingmen can defend you only from other NPC's, they won't engage players in free will. And even if they did, they wouldn't be a match for 90% of the players here. And other thing, they only follow you inside the system.
