Have you tried running everything with the Run As Administrator command in Vista / Win7?
Do you mean the program crashes directly, as in performs an error and closes completely? In that case, I don't know, reinstalling the system maybe.
Or does FMM become unresponsive while activating Crossfire? Because if this is the case, this is not a problem - just wait until the program finishes. Crossfire is a really big mod, and takes some time to activate.
EDIT: Okay, step 13, I've got V2.01, is that a problem?
The guide says to have V1.56, how do I fix that?
