I think it's a mixture of the "quality! of the nebulas textures in being really "nebulas", thin, shiny, "aetheric" (esp. on far ranges)and of LODs and viewing range of things, esp solars and some effects. And these are an improvement feature of the mod for the MP experience, so that you're able to see i.e. some "special" stations in alien infested regions or jumpholes when still some 30 k away.
