if it happened one and only one time, think of it as a "windows feature", if it happens often then: check the connection (usb prolly) check the joystick with another comp, and the comp with another joystick and locate which of them is causing trouble if joystick then change it for a new one, if comp then check usb drivers... if nothing is wrong with them then maybe the usb hub is damaged... a new usb pci card is not expensive...

so then maybe the magnetic field of earth interacted with the vibrational waves the jostick emited and your computer detected it... or maybe it is a coincidence... or maybe a wizard did...
