Hitting solid objects like asteroids (with multiple ship's weight) is generally not recommended. . This said ... some ships are real pain to fly through dense asteroids fields. Its not matter of shield itself, but rather ship front profile and ship ability use effectively strafe thrusters (you can use them manually also when using autopilot ... for some ships it can be quite big difference in 'bump' amounts.

CF top shields have higher capacity compared to vanilla ... maybe this is reason? To be honest I never had issue with shield self-regeneration since in fight was any regen usually too slow and I used bats or was not needed to rush and then I had no need to care about regeneration speed. I highly doubt there was any change to this, you may try add here times, it can be interesting to compare.
