I had a similar error on Windows 7 Ultimate, it just wouldn't update. I fixed it by going to Freelancer/EXE folder, deleting the cfwd.exe (moved it to a different folder at first, just to be safe), and then running update (Freelancer.exe). Crossfire updated normally and would enter the game.
