My personal favourite choice will be Alliance and Democracy.

There should be not issue with lacking combat skills (myself are also a good example). What we do now is searching our home which will allow us enough freedom, but also possibility better understand how works ED game mechanism based on factions and also slowly start with build our own path (as group, clan, company etc.) in ED space. This is at least how I understand this.

And independent vs alliance ... imo Alliance is only one step higher on "difficulty" scale .. dunno how to describe this better. On one side it will add some troubles, but on other side it can open us more new ways for play without risking "all the time fighting". ... I could be wrong in this, Im still very green with ED game mechanics on this lvl.

Well .. yea, name is terrible . But if we want go for some independent system ... Imo there is need to have some bases with short travel time, and if possible with shipyard and rebuy, rearm, etc and market facilities. Official group can have own minor faction (as I understand) and through this faction can influence ED background simulation = faction can (with players help) take other bases in system and also is able spread to others systems. Private group name actually is not important at all, if ppl know that private group name (and therefore know to what private group they should apply). I was on phone when posted my suggestion and unable to edit it as I figured out in "next" moment after I posted it that there will be the case with group name similar to cmdr name. To be honest, my personal opinion only, playing out of open is taking away allot of experience and reduce possible players fun. I play almost exclusively in open for more as two years and I know where is "danger" if I have the need for some adrenaline or want test how good is my ship defence and or want refresh my evading skills).
