Ehm, usually the idea in CF is to start off by trading or fighting the low-level NPCs. You're provided with 150k which is enough to buy a decent ship and some weapons. You can only hope to start exploring once you have enough money to buy the Junker's bribe (810,000 credits, buyable at Rochester Base in New York). With it, you should be neutral to most factions (except the Nomads, Dom'Kavaash, Xenos and a few others), which then enables you to pretty much go everywhere. Have fun.
