Hello Lance, on CF is not the best ship ... player flying skills in most cases decide about result. I suggest use search button, your question was asked more as one time ... if your main goal is exploration and fighting npcs, then you can go with almost everything and take what design you like most.

I only want add that Bastard is rly very slow turning ship ... when was created intro was needed to use "god" mode (invulnerability). But for flying in Sirius space is usable If you want something small and agile then look for ship which used Juni ( Butcher ).

Check combat guides in CF wiki ... CF NPCs are challenging. Nighthawk should be able dealt with DK gunboats normally if properly used.
