I suggest use mission save before you are in Dervon. Ancient Drone ships start appear in Dervon when you meet mission point in Dervon near Ancient BS.

All depend if is there timer trigger. This I think was in your first case when mission script simply launched drones attack after was reached time limit (no matter where you were atm). Try suggested mission save and if not work then one earlier ... you will need replay mission before but you will have chance to upgrade equipment. This is safest method which you can use.
