Actually Michael, having an automatic transmission is good for in-city traffic and commuting that is very stop and go, whereas you'd probably burn up a clutch on a manual doing that crap in slow traffic all day. Having a manual tranny however is good not only for fuel economy but also for more control over a vehicle as Faaby mentioned, you can downshift to slow yourself down instead of riding the break.
