Humans like to have a ready frame of reference for navigation, so even Cartesian coordinates are used in place of compass bearings, just as GPS systems now remove the need for a compass. Of course, as our propulsion & navigation systems continue to grow more sophisticated, we will need to begin to use more than 4 dimensions to locate a point in space-time, and arrive there in some semblance of "real time" with respect to the people we are communicating with in that locale...^^
