Most player create more than one character. This allows them to keep a train for making money and then have other characters in fighters, capital ships or freighters for other purposes. You are able to have up to 5 characters on your CF account (though it is possible to have multiple account if you require more characters). Can't give you any advice about battleships or other capital ships as I have not used them myself.
