In-game I would think - oftentimes I won't end up knowing about a new feature until someone else tells me, but that's the price to pay for not being a clever (or lucky) enough explorer. It wouldn't have a weapon and couldn't kill the visitor, just merely alert them to the fact that they are now in clan space.
