I am now playing Freespace 2 SCP MediaVP v. 3.6.10 Beta mod. Nearly finished the final mission.
On this coming weekend I plan to install BSG: Beyond the Red Line mod and rock with it.

It would be very hard to mod, since the official forum stated that the playership DSO is hardcored. But you may add or alter the other ships.

Turn off or lower down some video setting may make it runs smoother.
DSO and Freelancer have some similar features and game design, both are my favorite.
