After the "Beta 4 Reports" checkpoint in m1b in SP, King detects incoming Rogues, and a few seconds thereafter, the base and weapon platforms are supposed to appear. I always CTD at that point.

I had previously experienced a non-repro crash during the opening movie at the point where Freeport 7 was blowing up. In this case, running a second time (no other changes) played through okay until hitting the above CTD.

    System specs:
    XP SP3, AMD 3500+, 1GB RAM, ATI X800XL 256MB

I did not use "compatibility mode for older video cards" when installing CF. Would that, or any other setting affect crashing problems? Is deactivate/reactivate the only way to change those settings?

I've only played SP, and none of the FL mods really gave me exactly what I was hoping for. But CF was certainly the best.

What makes the SP game interesting to me, is the continually changing constraints that you have while progressing through it. It's not simply a matter of making enough cash to afford what you want to buy. What's 'best' keeps changing as you go along, and you often have to redo your reputations in order to obtain it. I just love all the exploring and planning related to outfitting a really nice ship, and I get to do that multiple times in the SP story.

The problem, is that no mod has attempted to compress more of the game's experience and equipment inside the scope of the story, and beef up the opposition accordingly. I know that's not going to happen at this late stage either.

OTOH, CF provides a few story-like quests to pursue after the main story is over, and so it gave me the most motivation to keep playing it. I've played CF in SP for many hundreds of hours. I eventually got stuck at a DK gate with horrendous firepower that I was never able to get past, as well as wandering some unknown systems looking for something that I knew was there, but could never find it. On the way though, I seriously admired the scope of the CF effort and want to give big thanks to its creators.

I have successfully used IONCROSS Freelancer Character Editor to redirect me to a different base when I got stuck somehow. (Usually when docking with too big of a ship, and it couldn't leave the dock).

Thanks for the tips. I simply did not go far enough in one extreme.

Looks like the few tidbits of info I had mixed with the surprise discovery of real mines inside the field led me to believe the solution was going to be more complex than it was. A mine maze, or something like that.

First of all, Kudos on the nifty use of hiding a real minefield inside a fake one. Very slick, and I've added another corpse to the field.

Sadly, after many hours of searching for the jump to Tomsk, I am still empty-handed.

I've mapped and fully circumnavigated the live minefield wthout finding any ways 'in'. I've also traversed all of the fake minefield in serpentine fashion with passes 18K apart, with the assumption that any jump gates/holes will show up on the scanner/nav inside of 10K.

Based on other comments, it seems like I may have 'missed' something, and I'm hoping to get some kind of hint on how to proceed in the face of rising frustration. (SP only -- I don't play MP).

Requested hints could be in one of the following forms:

If the jump doesn't show up on scanners or nav, that's a big one and my search tactics were invalid.

If detection range is less than 10K, I could have similarly missed it. What is the actual detection range? Does it vary wth the type of scanner you have on your ship, or does that only affect detecting other ships?

Basically, what's the ideal search technique?

Or something else you might think of based on what I've done already.

    Thanks for any help.

This issue deserves a special note somewhere that everyone will see. It took me awhile and multiple useless reinstalls before I realized what the real problem is:

If the story mode is currently showing you a mission waypoint, you cannot enter X-3043. Period.

It has nothing to do with 3D sound, correct installs, or any other issues. Something in the original game crashes when trying to determine a path to the mission waypoint through X-3043 which has so many jump gates.

This means that you can enter X-3043 only at specific times during the story. "Between" missions is okay, as long as you don't earn the required credits for mission advance within one of the X-connected systems. That reactivates the waypoint system, and could leave you stranded with no way to get back.

You really need to wait until the story mode is complete before you gain full access to the new systems without trouble.
