I've used Avast for a couple of years. Haven't had a virus since I installed it. Very frequent updates and upgrades, easy on resources too. You do have to register, which seems to turn away some people.

Last night, I was glad my gameing chair had arms. I would definately have broken something as many times as I would have fallen out of it, laughing! Maybe we need a six-pack+ before playing rule? ROTFL

When I started playing CF online, I had a problem with occasional freezes when there was a lot of gunfire/explosions. The problem went away when I turned down the settings the forty percent you mentioned. I don't know if it's related; I thought it was due to my old graphics card. I never had that problem in single player, though.
