Issue resolved. I turned off firewall to get it to run. Turning off anti-virus alone wasn't the problem.

And the saga continues.....
I went and ran the program with all defaults running. I have an onboard Intel 82845 G graphics card that only has 64mb of ram and according to CF launcher will not support 3d graphics. That was the only error (and of course program shut down). So it appears that enabling under 128 mb video option is what is stopping the program. And procexp only shows programs that should be there (yeah for me). I will next shut off all anti-virus and firewall and see what happens.
And thanks everyone for your help. -
Dell Pentium 4 2.8 ghz with 768 mb ram The exact error is CF Launcher Run-Time error 5 Invalid procedure call or argument. The launcher will connect to the server, download files, enable the multiplayer option and selecting either single or multiplayer give the error. I would think that Freelancer vanilla would not run if it was either a system or software issue but it does. I have turned off all advance graphic features since the graphic chip on the main board is limited in ability. I will reload the mod with everything turned on by default and see if it responds differently.

So where do I go for system requirements for Crossfire? Or for more help in solving this issue? I downloaded and fresh installed 1.82 and I get the same error. Or do I just go away and forget playing Freelancer?

Yes it happens every time.

Hello,
I am getting run-time error 5 Invalid procedure call or argument upon launching CF 1.9. I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything and the updater/server connection works fine. The only error I saw upon install of CF 1.9 was the initial error of "can't load bitmap" However the verification of the installer passed. I have downloaded VB6 and installed prior to re-installation and have read all the other threads related to this. So I am at a loss. I am left with the thought that perhaps my system is too old to run it. (dell dimension 2400)
