The ground near the old gas station is fissured and warped by a conglomeration of gravitational anomalies, resulting in a number of caverns and quite deep fissures in the ground, as well as the characteristic claw formation.
Gravitational anomalies and fissures aren't the only danger the Claw gives - the caverns are inhabited by snorks, extremely hostile humanoid mutants.

Later that day I took a quest that required me to go into those caverns to retrieve a crate of goods for another stalker. Good thing I also had a SPAS-12; the shotgun is invaluable when fighting most of local wildlife.
