You get too hot if you go too close, causing damage to systems first (100-150%), then to hull (150-200%) and end in destruction of ship if 200% are reached. That can escalate quite quickly, as your ship struggles to come out of gravity well and is very slow close to a mass. No energy needed for cooling, these flaps go open to cool down ship to reasonable level and are not glowing if ship is cold. The silent-running I mentioned in the thread "ED reviews" is mainly shutting these flaps so no heat get's out of the ship, decreasing range you can be scanned - but internal ship temp goes through the roof very quick in silent-mode.

If you look at the picture from cockpit facing the sun in my folder, you can see "fuel scoop" at work... sniffing H2, i guess.

Do you explode if you get close enough? Makes no sense to refill batteries, if you need the energy to cool down your vessel
