... problem with this is, that char stay few sec active on server (after you normally quit) also for other purposes (as is leave space in middle of PvP fight and others.) Its simply to say impossible set conditions to be perfect for all ... (especially if is server working worldwide)

Yeah completely understand, It was only a query regarding whether anyone new of a way to reduce the detection time. Clearly there shouldn't be as I think about more, due to those reasons.

Thanks for the reply, Ok aliens time to die...

Hi, So just wondering if there was a way of speeding up the connection failed detection rate... For someone like me who lives in Aus every now and then for whatever reason the connection fails, thats fine. But what aint cool is when it reconnects and your in gurm fully loaded with 4 therhons, 8 kelyrds, 12 Que's,5 warsys and a pile of nys's and cel ors, and as soon as you regain control of the ship you have appeared surrounded by nomads and you blow up before you can hit use shield battery. I'm not that fussed over the loss (I will now just have to go get more, DIE ALIENS!!!!) But it is annoying, it has happened before.

Any Ideas on survivng these connection hiccups?

    Cheers,
    Bucket

I have no intention of arguing, but again, that is a plasma cutter regarding the high temperatures, not a laser. The laser used to cut the Abrams is a 10kW laser same as in the aerospace industry, within which I work, as it is required for the ceramic compounds used, lasers are not designated by temperature only power output the temperature is dependent on the emmisivity of the medium used and the material being cut. The reason Laser is used on Abram's specifically is due to the minimal size of the ceramic tiles, so extreme precision well below tolerances of 1/10 of a mm is required.

Plasma actuation is never intended for main propulsion systems, its a solution to control surface problems, not engine performance or thrust generation, I spent my Honours project back in the day surrounded by them every day. This is why I reacted to your first thread when you claimed 300hp and then 30'000hp. I should have left it alone.

And yes you could move a 500 kT battleship with nothing but a solar sail in space, that's the whole point behind them and why they are being developed, large spacecraft propulsion systems that do not require fuel, they are inertia based systems, slow to get moving but with a higher achievable velocity given time.
Horsepower is only required for, as you have all clearly pointed out, acceleration, the RATE of velocity change. Unfortunately acceleration is the most costly factor in regards to space operations. The only current or future systems that provide acceleration in the ranges you are talking all require fuel, which is heavy and takes up a lot of space, (back to the whole realism/pods argument there).

Back to sci fi: Granted, specifically in the case of crossfire and other popular sci fi, space ship worlds, the engines would be fusion based, collecting debris to fuel the reaction, mathematically it is possible, I remember an astrophysics lecturer who couldn't understand why us bloody engineers wouldn't just make one as the maths was there in front of us, but the material science doesn't currently exist (but may one day, here's hoping).

Bringing it all back to my earlier comments, Plasma actuators and the like (even electromagnetic propulsion) will never be capable of providing the accelerations you are imagining, hence my responses regarding horsepower, which should be thrust if we are going to be pedantic.

    Huor... YES!

Topic: pod Size, it works, its balanced, maybe change it slightly for a month if people really want it changed. I think it would just increase the rate people fly to alaska/texas e.t.c. might add 20 minutes to each pile of millions and most new players complain earning money at the start can be a grind.

Oh one other thing re.moving in space, you don;t need much power at all, 30'000hp would be excessive in space. To me the current space propulsion technique that has me really excited is solar sails, they have a very small impulse, but space is large, time frames are long so a little constantly actually means solar sails can achieve the speeds required to overtake the voyager exploration crafts, they just take a long time picking up the pace!

And yeah now We are WAY off topic! Maybe we should start a How awesome is space, what would apply to crossfire thread?

A little off topic but erhm yeah it is just a screen shot, took it the day I signed up just because I've never bothered making/using a consistent avatar online. Flew a Rapier to where you can buy the Seahorse, switched the view, liked what I saw, click. Probably should change it to the luxury Liner as it would fit better with the store, I just like the Seahorse and Rapier, they look good, completed SP with each, loved every minute.

Now we can already do laser, even powerful, ..... we got a plasma ray cutting machine, extremely powerful, a ray at 20'000° celsius that cut quickly everything !
( The version with 10'000° is used to cut the hull of the M1A1/A2 USA tank (!) to install upgrades ).

We also have the engines used to do little movements in space at the Space Shuttle, that are, if I remember well, electric-magnetic-plasma based.
They don't use fuel and have a light-blue exhaust. Updated 3 years ago, can have a power of 300 HP. But scientists are sure to rapidly increase this power.
( Probably, 50 years from now, they'll have a power of 30'000 HP, not sufficient for takeoff from Earth, but to move in space ).

Re. Laser Cutting, I think you mean Watts, not Temperature in C (especially when referring to the Abrams, this is a 10kW laser, basically it is an Aluminium cutting laser) ? Also Laser cutting is slow, very slow compared to plasma cutting. It also has depth issues and it's maximum cut depth through thick material is actually quite low compared to, for example again, plasma cutting. Granted it is true that extreme temperatures can be reached but this defeats the point of laser cutting, which is for extreme precision manufacturing.

But yes what you said re. lasers etc is technically feasible except for the plasma actuators. If you can find a 300hp plasma actuator that has been repeated, submitted to a peer review journal and critiqued by peers, then damn I wasted 7 years of work. Otherwise...

...woah. Um, I don't mean to be blunt or sound like a lecturer, or a smart a*ed, pain in the a*.

BUT, please be careful about claiming some of the things claimed in this thread. I know a little about some of the things discussed here and there are some very inaccurate claims being made especially with the use of numbers... (oh and the units: the system is undefined, so imagine whatever you want re. their true meaning. The scale is inconsistent so it makes no difference and is a pointless argument)

This is a game, not a simulator. Reckon that should be the end of the argument as the current methodologies are for developing a balanced fun playing environment, with elements of realism based on current knowledge. I agree it is valid to question the volume of the pods, but it currently works in game. Increasing the hold space used would just mean that people would head to prisons more regularly, and get annoyed with flying times probably starting a new thread complaining about it.

A Suggestion has been made, noted and is now clearly discussed, fine keep discussing it, I don’t agree it should be changed, that's my Opinion. But please, hold back on the claims about real technologies. I play Crossfire to pretend, garner inspiration and have FUN, not remind me of work.

after our casual chat in game yesterday, an idea was born - or did you have this advert in mind all along??

...It was the last little nudge i needed.

if at any case a BS to dock would probably fit better...?

I've had a good think about this and I think i'm changing my tune here...I now agree that Battleships should NOT be allowed docking in Innercore sector... Why you ask?

    1) The story... Its just trent...tiny little trent in his tiny little space ship, do the SP without god mode on... getting a battleship is basically out of the question without going AWOL through the middle of the vanilla campaign and pod hunting till your trigger finger hurts... not what the story intended really.

    2) Well it would make the "hard" aspect of innercore dissapear. It would be too easy to get a battleship or two (or seven) involved in an en masse alien weapon hunt...making them far too accessible and change the whole dynamic of the MP universe as it now stands. Think about it...getting warsys and the like is hard work...it encourages planning, team play and extreme co operation. Thanks to everyone who agreed with me initially...but think about it... it would reduce the Multiplayer goodness that crossfire provides.

I Still agree its a pain that it is such a BIG REAL WORLD COMMITMENT...its huge! No argument there...doubt i'll ever send a battleship all the way through because of this, BUT I think it would ruin so many other aspects of the game...it has to be a balance...without a lot more thought on how to keep the balance I agree OP should keep it as is.

    My two cents anyway,
    Bucket

Fair Call... See where your coming from... What about there cruisers and Motherships though, surely they dock, guess the compatibility extended to fighters by DK would also be extended to capital ships?

My real point I guess; it is unfortunate that the capital ships can't stay in Innercore, the supplies e.t.c. that would be onboard from a consistency point would sustain the ship in deep space for a period of time, so being able to park a capital ship there would make sense.

Heading into inner core is a big real world time commitment, hence my suggestion. But again, no argument, if they be the rules then they be the rules. Keeps Alien weapons in the hands of community based players I guess :)
