I can't edit posts without entering text in the reason text field. Its supposed to be optional, right? It's even mentioned to be optional. I'm using Google chrome.

Dunno what's the matter, but after submitting the post some time passes, then edit reason becomes mandatory. Just put a single symbol in the edit reason field, case solved.

its normal this way

Hello,
maybe it is normal but not very convenient. Sometimes you edit a recent post quicky, press submit and aargh! - need to type something in the reason field. In other cases you find a silly mistake in your old post and try to remove it, and then it asks about the reason and you don't know what to type there...Anyway the most important misunderstanding is about the feature being optional while in fact it isn't. Can it be possible in the next site version to leave this field empty? Or, at least, could the word "optional" be removed from description, so as not to confuse people?

There is a timer, if you edit your post within (i think0) 5 minutes this field is optional - you can edit without leaving a comment. After the time has expired you need to comment on what you did edit.
I mean typos can be corrected that way without comment on removing typos. Other than this, edits after quite some time dont normally include the correction of typos. It either adds or removes content of your posts and this could easily destroy the flow of the discussion or comments already made. And it that regard you are pleased to leave a comment for all the followers of a thread, to be able to recognize what has been changed. Not the worst feature. Indeed it helps others to keep track of changes. And in that regard you should leave comments on what you did change. It does not help just to make a . or any other symbol.
