The Wing Commander movie club found The Birdcage (1996) to be… absolutely delightful! This week, we voted on a selection of movies from the '90s and once again I'm proud of everyone for forgoing some of the big action movies of our youths to go with a comedy. And that comedy is the Jim Carey classic Dumb and Dumber (1994)! If you don't quote this movie regularly… well, you're just not as old as most of us. The connection to Wing Commander on this one is literal! Dumb and Dumber was front and center in pop culture in 1995… and it was quoted in Privateer 2: The Darkening! One of the generally silly wingmen bios (entirely silly in this case) is for Clevis 'Guts' Nugget and his quote is "Gonna kick your ass, sea bass!"... which comes straight from Dumb and Dumber. BACKGROUND
The fattest pilot ever to achieve triple-Ace status, 'Guts' Nugget's corpulence and appetite are standing jokes among the mercenary community; it is rumoured that his ship's cockpit had to be specially widened for him to sit in it. A habitue of the Galactic Gourmet, he has usually spent every deca-credit of his hire fee on luxurious foodstuffs before his retro jets have cooled. It is fortunate for him that his skills warrant such prodigious expenditure; he is more than competent as a combat pilot, and his appetite means that he is most unwilling to desert a paying client. All in all, a good hire; just don't stand him lunch.
Note that Nugget's status as the fattest triple ace should not be confused with Wise Hunter, who the card game firmly establishes as "the fattest Kilrathi pilot". On a game card, this type of information unrelated to actual play is called "flavor text"... and it's all the more surprising here because the Wing Commander card game doesn't really use it elsewhere!
Where can I find a copy of the movie for the watch party?
PLEASE NOTE that we will be watching the superior theatrical cut and NOT the later 'uncut' version of the movie. The run time should be ~1h46m and not ~1h53m. Dumb and Dumber is available for rent or purchase on all of the standard streaming services. If you would like a physical copy, it was released on BluRay in the US in 2008 and remains in print around the world. An open matte version is available for download from the Internet Archive. If you are not able to locate a copy please stop by the Discord and ping a CIC staff member before Friday's showing.
How do we watch the movie together?
It's pretty low tech! Simply join the Wing Commander CIC Discord on Friday and we will be chatting (in text) along with the film in the main channel. Everyone who wants to join in should bring their own copy and we will count down to play them together at 10 PM EST. Everyone is welcome and we encourage you to join in the conversation; sharing your thoughts helps make the experience better for everyone!

The movie club movies are voted on each week by the Wing Commander Discord. The poll is typically posted 24 hours before each week's screening and the next movie is announced at the end. The choices for the poll come from a master pool of Wing Commander-related movies. If you would like to suggest a film for inclusion in that pool you can post it to this thread.
