Diary of Ajay: "Sudden Surge"

Ajay's Diary: Sudden Surge.

Well, the day seemed to promise nothing, I thought, lying on my bed inside the makeshift living room in the cargo bay of my Basilisk and reading some "Horus Heresy" books on my personal console. I've been waiting on Mirtrak for a second day since I've made a quick visit to Sirius, and thought about already going back.
But then, a signal interrupted music in my headphones. A new message. From... none other than Flyagin himself.
Last time I've seen, heard or at least got a message from my commander was last year ago, so I was glad to hear he's doing alive and well.
Switching from the "Flight Of The Eisenstein"[1], I opened the message and started to read.
"Ajay,
Defense Ministry agreed to start mutual operation with Independent Operations Consortium in Jokusuka. They asked Intelligence agents for assistance, and since you are well-known to Dom'Kavash, in order to take the easiest way to fulfill this mission I've been instructed to send you to do this. You are to head there, find a planet called Balboa, map it on your navigational system and plant a surveillance complex onto the surface. After it will be completed, head to Coalition space, land onto the Gorlowka carrier and hand the encryption codes of the complex over to First Rate Captain Alexeev, commander of the Gorlowka. DO NOT attempt to contact it during your flight through Dom'Kavash space, DO NOT transmit the codes and DO NOT hand them over to anybody another. Destroy any other copies of these codes.
Coalition Intelligence Directorate Colonel
Igor E. Flyagin".
About time I'm being remembered about as I've started to think I'm already forgotten by everyone. Though there is something. That amount of secrecy disturbs me. There's something isn't right about this.
I've got up and headed to the cockpit. I've got some ideas.
And, once more, it's the same system check.

Soon after this, I've headed the ship to the launching airlock, heading to the exit of the Inner Core sector.

Hyperspace.
There are places I love. There are places I hate. And then there is Hyperspace.
The one good thing in Hyperspace, not even Dom'Kavash will start to ask questions in case my ship starts to fly somewhere. So I've unstrapped from the cockpit seat and headed to the tecnical room.
I turn to the right side, lock and detach the torpedo feed, activate the power loader and pulling the "breech" back.
With a loud hissing, the Sunslayer torpedo leaves the launcher. I turn the power loader towards one of the big crates, accurately laying a torpedo next to it and opening it.
Inside lays a thing that is on a first look a Sunslayer torpedo. Only it isn't.
It actually was a "Podmenysh"[2] surveillance drone, developed by Coalition engineers for Order pilots. Or me, I've thought and a chuckle escaped my lips. Also, Flyagin should have put a hand to it's name I've thought. Oh, he'll be angry once he'll know that the K-719 is going to receive an actual name and no one is gonna let him to choose.
I carefully take the surveillance torpedo with a power loader, place it into the launcher and lock, then I place the unused torpedo into the emptied crate and return the torpedo feed back into its place. Running a diagnostics, I've made sure nothing is going to jam, then I deactivate the loader and go back to the cockpit, taking a small, welded metal case from the outer side of the crate.
Such a surveillance torpedo was needed in order to make surveillance easier to a simple rank-and-file pilot. Otherwise from not going boom on the impact, it behaves itself as any usual Sunslayer torpedo and is launched from usual Sunslayer launcher. Even the scanners and radars can't tell apart it and usual big-badaboom-carrying "Sunslayer" - hence the name - and even when hitting a ship's hull it would act as it's designed to: collect and transmit data, while being stuck on the impact place - not always though, depending on the toughness of that current ship.
With a smile, I dock with a jumphole that is supposed to take me back to normal space.

Finally, after long flight I've reached planet Balboa in Jokusuka system. Strangely, there was even a storage depot of Coalition. I've raised an eyebrow.
-Hmmm... Don't know why did they even asked me with it if they have already been there? - I say to myself, then guide my ship closer to the planet. As I've closed the planet, a Dom'Kavash Mothership appeared nearby.
-Flak, here she comes again... Get out of here, stalker... - I mutter, flying around the planet to get out from its sight.
As the mothership disappears from the range of close radars, I target the planet and press one of the triggers on my steer.

A "misfired Sunslayer" heads towards the surface as I charge my cruise engines and fly away. Whether it lands in the ocean, in the sand or in the mountain, it will work.
As I continue my flight towards Sovetskaya, I take the small metal box from my pocket - the same box I've taken from the crate with the spy drone. They hide the activation and encrypting codes in METAL BAWKSES, the cowards, the fools![3] References aside, that box contains these codes, without which the surveillance complex is useless. Each of them have individual codes different for each false torpedo, and the box containing them is capable to withstand some serious sh*t, unless said sh*t is a special key. I didn't get any other information... okay?
As I've arrived to Gurm, I've been contacted.
-Ajay, welcome back. You'll be met on the landing pad - voice of Elena D, one of the main Gorlowka comms operator, entered my headphones.
Unlike those communications and intelligence officers like me back in my days, she doesn't watch over routine patrols or Dark Reigns. She is a pair of eyes and ears of captain Alexeev himself, as well as being his second-in-command and over-watcher (Technically a Commissar, but she doesn't like being called as such) from Security Comittete - the latter was the reason she goes by an army rank (Lt. Col. rather than Cpt. 2nd Rate). Rumors about her being more to him were just that - rumors, as some people of Gorlowka Staff say. She usually checks out inputs from Vorkuta, not from Gurm, so I was surprised.
-Roger that, comrade Lieutenant Colonel.

CNS Gorlowka.
Landing pad.
As soon as I allow the door to open, a massive figure enters the interior of my ship. Wow, it's indeed Alexeev, strange. The screams of my inner flak-o-meter are usually right. And my flak-o-meter is now quoting two people at the same time, Admiral Ackbar and Commissar Ciaphas Cain, "it's a trap" and "run like frak" respectively.
-Nice work, Ajay! I hope you didn't forget to actually launch the thing, hehehe - Gorlowka commander said after the exchange of salutes.
-Don't worry, comrade Captain, First Rate. Here is the package. Other orders?
-No, you are free. Thank you.
-Glad to serve! - I said loudly, after what he left.
I closed the door and sent directives to relocate my ship into one of free hangars. But that still doesn't calm my worries.
Something's brewing.

A/N:
Did you miss me, readers? I've missed you... xD

Footnotes:
1)A fourth book of "Horus Heresy" book series, written by James Swallow.
2)"Подменыш", sort of literal translation of the word "Changeling" into Russian. Actually a Starcraft II reference.
3)Dawn Of War Soulstorm reference.

"Across the savage skies and through the fissures in the fields,
The rumble of the engines and the trundle of the wheels,
Through hell and horror trudge and yet their spirits never yield.
Will they sing of these forsaken pawns of war?"
