Deep Silver and 4A Games’ upcoming title Metro Exodus is taking its post-apocalyptic premise outside the underground and into the Russian wilderness for its next adventure. In the journey along the world’s harsh and weathered surface, player character Artyom and the rest of the Spartan faction utilize a large locomotive train called The Aurora to safely go from one area to the next. While transportation plays a big role on the Metro Exodus train, it ultimately offers an experience similar to The Normandy from the Mass Effect series.
In Mass Effect, Commander Shepard uses The Normandy as a base of operations between missions, and the same is true with Metro Exodus‘ Aurora. While aboard the steam-powered machine, players are free to roam around, tinker with the workbench, hide weapons away in a personal arsenal, and even strike up conversation with passengers. Adding to the similarities, some interactions could even lead to side missions that wouldn’t be available by any other means.
As players traverse the nuclear wasteland, The Aurora will be constantly changing to accommodate missions. Various cars will regularly be added to the train, as will people who are met along the journey. Some recruits even have skill sets that directly improve life aboard The Aurora, such as survivors with mission information or a handyman that can aid in train maintenance. Mass Effect (the second one in particular) also depended on the presence of other characters to ensure peak performance on The Normandy, even affecting the outcome of the game in extreme cases.
In addition to these comparable experiences, Metro Exodus is aiming to shake up many of the series’ established conventions with bold new changes. These include the introduction of various sandbox elements, a new crafting system, a set year-long timespan, and many other innovations. More details are expected to drop soon as Metro Exodus prepares for its 2018 launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
