    SRV Scarab

SRV is a commonly used shortcut for Surface Recon Vehicle and how its names implies, is used for driving on planets surfaces (requires Horizons DLC!). SRV Scarab is very compact and agile vehicle which can handle quite rough driving/terrain, walls climbing, flips, falls, dancing (well, this don't :) ) and behaves differently depending on the planet gravity. For doing some crazy manoeuvres and/or obstacles overcoming it have vertical_thruster, for combat it have shield and plasma repeater turret (usable from SRV cockpit and also from special turret view). For emergency stop you can use hand brake, and you have also at your disposal lights for smooth driving on the dark places of the planets. Is also good to mention that you are using closed air supply circuit while in SRV and that your air tank is limited. But good message is, that you can use micro-materials for repair, rearm and also restore air, so theoretically you have at disposal unlimited time for stay in this vehicle. You can also repair/rearm (but not restore air!) by re-docking into your ship. In case that your SRV will be destroyed, you will be automatically returned to your ship (regardless of if it is still landed, or dismissed on orbit).

To get SRV into your ship you will need first equip Planetary Vehicle Hangar which comes in different sizes (allowing taking one or more SRVs) and two weight/energy variants (heavy/low-energy or lightweight/big-energy consumption). I recommend chose light variant, because you can switch power off for this equipment module (will not consume ship energy) and powered it up only when you will want deploy SRV on planet surface. For safety is also recommended "dismiss" your ship once you are in your SRV. Ship will take-off, stay on the planet orbit, and can't be damaged! Ship will dismiss also automatically, if you will go further as 2(3?) km from place where you have landed.

For locate different things (Wrecks/POI sites, Skimmers/Defence Turrets, Data points, Meteorites/Resource outcrops, Cargo Canisters) SRV Scarab uses Wave_Scanner which detect things before (in-front) your vehicle using different "wave" pattern and sound. Nice utility which shows how it all works is available here. Close things are then displayed on radar (similar like you have on your ship). If you will want scan something (like earlier mentioned data points), switch into turret view, chose scanned object, and keep pressing secondary fire. It will start scanning which need few seconds to be finished.

In next video you can see how SRV Scarab can be used for "Data-points scanning" raids in planetary settlements. Such way you can collect certain special "Data" needed for engineering (upgrading your ship parts by Engineers). You can also see that Scarab can handle also very rough driving. One last thing which I want to recommend is learn difference between driving SRV in Assist-ON (by default) or Assist-OFF modes. I found that second mode much better fitting for my driving skills, especially because it moves forward only if you keep pressing key designated for it (once is key released, SRV slows down and stops).

    SRV Scorpion

SRV Scorpion is only available in Live mode of ED! Below you can find short comparison between Scarab and Scorpion SRVs and Scorpion's introduction video:

    SRV Scarab:

    • lightweight, all-terrain wheeled vehicle designed for exploring planetary surfaces
    • equipped with Wave_Scanner1
    • 4 cargo space
    • one seat
    • strong jump thrusters
    • fast, drive comfortably at 10-20m/s on rougher terrain especially when combined with short jumps
    • obstacles or rough terrain may make driving more difficult
    • have one weapon: turret gattling which have precise aim over long distances, but ability penetrate heavy armour is very low. Avoid incoming fire at all cost while in Scarab. Perfect for killing troops over long distances or basic skimmers.
    • available for purchase on most stations with outfitting service

    SRV Scorpion

    • heavyweight, armored and heavily armed vehicle designed for combat
    • 2 cargo space
    • two seats (yes, you can take other cmdr with you)
    • weaker jump thrusters ... when combinbed with this SRV weight it results in ability to do only low-height and short jumps
    • slow driving speed, but much less prone to chaotic course changes when driving over rough terrain
    • very heavily armed, this SRV have quite decent ability to survive incoming fire
    • have two weapons: heavy cannon (Surge Repeater) and rocket launcher (Aculeus Launcher). Cannon have quite bad aim, especially at start of burst fire, which with longer burst of fire improves. Perfect for destroying military skimmers and/or raids against heavily armed settlements. Troops killing is not the strongest point of this vehicle due cannon fire initial inacuracy ... however Scorpion can comfortably come closer and long enough survive hostile fire to take down even squad of troops.
    • available for purchase from military economy stations/ports with outfitting service

1 Wave_Scanner is an SRV-specific module that is currently only available on the Scarab. It is a unidirectional, long-range, forward-facing scanner_ that detects a variety of objects and points of interest, including ships, Skimmers, Defence Turrets, data points, Raw Material deposits, and Cargo Canisters. • we should build something like that irl
