Is it possible to assign weapons which are not mounted to weapons groups or do they have to be mounted and active to be able to use them?

Weapons have to be mounted and assigned to groups; each wg have to be activated with personal key.

The Groups are stored server sided, keep in mind that you may have a little delay while using them (depends on your connection).

Once you understand weapons groups Spiky, then you can start to master alternate firing!

Ahhh, well that's simple! Here's my layout for example:
WG1 - All guns (used to lock in alternate firing rate)
WG2 - half of the ship's guns (except sometimes the 8.33 rate guns, this WG is to start the alternate firing rate)
WG3 - missiles/torp salvo (aka "alpha strike")
WG4 - auto CM firing
WG5 - CDs (if I didn't have a 5-button mouse that is haha)Some people may have more elaborate setups, but to be able to select your guns or missiles or CDs at will is a very useful thing to have.

Actually that would explain a weird "bug" I've run into at times on the server with my weapons groups... Occasionally I would accidentally leave my weapons groups selection on something other than weapons group 1 when I docked and when I would undock, that group and possibly weapons group 2 would all be messed up by either highlighting no weapons or highlighting all weapons... VERY freakin' annoying, as it's caused me to get blown to pieces on several occasions in RP situations and screwed up several duels for me as well in the past.
There's nothing like the feeling of getting into a heated situation in dogfighting trying to hit up your missiles or torps against an enemy target and you get nothing from the weapons groups, ARGGGGHHH... I hate that crap!!!

Rapid Fire of different Gun Types related to the Wing Hardpoints or sets of different Missile Combinations to save ammo; for example no emp missile when the shield of the target is down or no cds when the target do not have missiles anymore etc. But you are correct, learning to use the Number Keys will need some training but is most effective.
Simply assign other keys which are better to reach for you.

You can also save yourself from all problems by just mounting one gun on ship

You can put up a solid fight without weapon group assigning, you just waste a bit more ammo... or you fire everything manally which is a bit more complicated in the beginning
