Running Crossfire on higher resolutions

  • I bought a new laptop that can run any game smoothly with 1600x900 (HD 5730 1GB)

    I am interest in finding out how to run CF on that resolution

    Thank You in advance for your help

  • So you finally received your laptop :D
    Cool :P

    Also, your answer... here: thread
    you can also find it on moddb.com.

  • let's suppose I am a noob...
    Ok I get the first two file changes, but the rest... adjusting HUD and fonts OMG
    anyone skilled in this area to help out?

    resolution I want is 1600x900 (all my games and my desktop run this so it's not like I'm gonna be changing it every now and then)

  • yeah, i3 350m 2,26ghz, 4gb ddr3, hd 5730 1gb, HDD 500gb, N71Ja model 17,3''

    eventually found some extra cash to buy this one :D

    Spiky did you notice that most new ASUS notebooks (like N71 series) only run on Windows7, I tried XP it didn't support any drivers couldn't even connect to the Internet hihi

  • meh you shouldve bought the 16' one... cheaper and better CPU

    i5-520 2,4 ghz; the rest is the same

    also runs games smoother because native is 1366x768 ... better supported by the 5730

    but still nice laptop :P

    and nope didn't care about XP - Windows 7 > XP big time

    Fleet Captain Spiky / WL

  • well mate, that model isn't available in my country, actually, no ASUS with i5 is available here, only i3 (like mine) and i7 (too expensive), and they were all either 15,6''s or 17,3''s so I took the bigger one

    BTW: Why won't Freelancer recognise my video card? Now I can't run anything higher than 1024x768 from CF menu
    I installed the driver and the Windows detected it nicely... anyone knows the answer?

  • CF doesnt support your VGA, it has little to do with windows.(well.. actually a lot, but the point is: fl doesn't have support for it)

    on 1600x900,

  • thats ok

    i tested fonts using mathematic calculations and this is what i got:

    I did notice the ship seems closer (I can barely see the rear end of Lagg, and with Soulforge I barely see after the ships' middle towards it's rear) than usual and bigger... is that normal for a big resolution or?

  • nice,

    increase
    [CockpitCamera]
    fovx = 95
    znear = 2.000000

    [ThirdPersonCamera]
    fovx = 95

    edit:thats values i use

  • Although mine is a desktop....I run CF at 1900 x 1200. Smooth. I am looking for the right values for the fonts and hud though. The 1680 x 1050 values are close, but not close enough.

  • i dont think its a good idea to run the game in non standard aspect ratio resolutions or is that 'native' to your monitor?

  • i dont think its a good idea to run the game in non standard aspect ratio resolutions or is that 'native' to your monitor?

    I'm going to guess that he's using a 24" or larger monitor, in which case it would indeed be his native resolution.

  • now, 1920x1200 makes it 8:5...

    well.. i did try running it at your rez. was hoping monitor would go out of range but it simply got reset to 800x600..

    if my lame calculations are corrent camera should be:
    [WinCamera]
    fovx = 72.571420

  • thanks for the camera correction, Heaven

    now, about my calculations ( i dont wanna seem like playing all smart and everything) so heres what i did:

    on one side we have the original values f.e. 0.040000 and on the other side is the values from Black's thread f.e. 0.030000 (notice to always have 6 figures behind the "0.")

    Black's res was 1600x1050 and I needed 1600x900
    Now, since the values are 99-100% only concerned with object and text height position, and since both numbers are 1600, I only needed to compare 1050 and 900 because they are height values of your resolution (simple division) and got 1.6666666667, meaning I had to decrease my values 1,666666667 times less than Black

    So, all you do is go over each of the values and do like this:

    example: 0.040000 - 0.030000 = 0.010000
    0.010000 / 1.666667 = 0.006000

    Ok, now we know how much we have to decrease to get it right on 1600x900, by 0.006

    All left to do is:
    0.040000 - 0.006000 = 0.034000

    And if my math is not wrong that should be it, not that difficult, at least when you have 1600xABC resolution
    I believe other resolutions can also be solved with mathematics, but I'm not that good anymore (last time I used math seriously was uff a long time ago)

    As you go over each of the numbers you will notice a pattern and will be able to do it in 5 mins (all of the font values)

    NOTE: I have only proven this work on FONTS so far, about cameras, hmm, only 3 values, you might as well experiment with that one

    Hope this helps at least one person (More than enough)

    If you see all messed up dont worry, make sure you are docked somewhere and you only need to launch to space and it should all be ok (at least with 1600xABC resolutions as I said)

    Use this to help you out as you do the calculations

    EDIT: Heaven, I tried your fixed calculations for cameras and here is how it looked :D

  • Just back from trying 1600x900 cameras setup, and found out that
    [CockpitCamera]
    fovx = 70
    znear = 2.000000

    [ThirdPersonCamera]
    fovx = 70

    [DeathCamera]
    fovx = 70

    in cameras.ini

    fits perfectly with HUD

    Will do a few more different setup test and report the results

    EDIT: Here are two nice pictures with this setup of cameras

    and

  • im not that good with this widescreen stuff as i dont have widescreen but....

    wouldnt it be good to create different settings for different resolutions and put them into the mod so ppl just can choose the setting they need?
